Nigerian government has failed to respond strongly to xenophobic attacks — Lawyer

Activist lawyer Maduabuchi Idam has criticised the Nigerian government over what he described as its weak response to the recurring xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa, urging authorities to adopt stronger measures to protect citizens.

In a statement, Idam said the Federal Government has failed to implement deliberate policies capable of sending a clear message to South Africa over the treatment of Nigerians living in the country.

According to him, discussions at the National Assembly have produced little or no meaningful outcome, while South African companies continue to operate and make huge profits in Nigeria.

He argued that the government should consider lawful policy measures such as stricter regulatory oversight, targeted fiscal policies and other economic reforms to ensure South African businesses operating in Nigeria feel the consequences of the attacks on Nigerians.

Idam also expressed disappointment over the delay in delivering judgment in his lawsuit against MultiChoice Nigeria Limited, saying the case raises important issues relating to consumer protection and the alleged exploitative practices of the South African-owned company.

He noted that while diplomacy remains important, it should be backed by firm and lawful actions that protect the dignity, economic interests and rights of Nigerians both at home and abroad.
